Starting Seed- Kaleidoscope Kids
Mar 27, 2020

Hey Guys, It’s Emily here from MiaThrives!

Today I am going to go over the easy steps to starting seed at home. This year is the first time I have had a garden of my own and am really excited to get planting. I am planning to plant lots of flowers that attack butterflies, I started with Marigold. Click here for a list of 15 other flowers.

What you need

  • Soil
  • Seeds
  • Containers, I picked up some decomposable ones from the dollar store you can also use a toilet paper roll or egg carton
  • Water
  • Something to mark the type of seed (a popsicle stick works great)
  • Seed tray with cover

Step 1

Fill containers up with soil and make sure it is damp (not wet.) An easy way to do this is to mist the soil.

Step 2

Create indents in the soil about 1 inch, this is where you are going to place the seeds.

Step 3

Place two or three seeds in each indent you made. The reason we are putting more than one is because not every seed is going to make it.

Step 4

Keep them indoors as they need to be kept warm. They do best in a moist environment and that is why covering them for the first week or so helps. Check the soil every day to make sure they do not dry out. However, also be mindful not to overwater. They should never be sitting in water.

Happy Planting!

We used knee pads to protect the skin on my knees. I started wearing them when I was around six months old and learning to crawl, and I continued to wear them growing up in school.
