Mia Idiens was born with beautiful, delicate butterfly skin, just like her mom Melissa, and her mom’s dad. Mia is a big girl (almost five years old!) and knows her disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) makes her skin get hurt more easily than not butterfly skin, but that sure doesn’t stop her from having fun. When Mia was a baby, her mom wrote a book about her called “A story about Mia—A Butterfly Child” and then she started a whole entire organization called MiaThrives to help her family meet other people who have skin like her. Mia has an important job at MiaThrives, and that is to show everyone that even though a kid has EB, they can still do cool things and have lots and lots of fun. Mia loves to run and play with her friends, her dogs Rainbow and Shay, her dad Daryl, and her mom, so she wears special pretty gloves to protect her hands. Mia is very brave when it’s time to clean and care for her wounds. She hopes every Butterfly Child will hear about MiaThrives so they’ll know there are plenty of other kids out there, just like them.
Mia is represented by an imaginative pink butterfly (Mia’s favourite colour), and its wings are a dark shade, similar to the MiaThrives logo. Pink is also the colour that represents love—of others and of oneself. Pink is also universally associated with inner peace, friendship, and approachability. As the inspiration behind MiaThrives, Mia’s zest for life and creativity helps us all to keep creating our lives full of colour and love.
